Next I want to tell you about the theological seminar. The lectures are also online benhind the link above, so I won't repeat them. Lecturers came from all over the world and from different churches. I will only tell briefly about the thoughts of brother Roger that influenced me the most.

Minulla ei ennen seminaaria ollut paljonkaan tietoa veli Rogerin elämästä ja ajattelusta. Monet kiinnostavat seikat hänen elämästään toistuivat useiden alustajien puheissa: esimerkiksi miten Rogeriin oli vaikuttanut hänen isoäitinsä avarakatseisuus ja auttavaisuus sekä Rogerin oman lapsuuden vakava sairaus. Lisäksi minua kosketti se, että hän kohtasi myös paljon vastustusta. Monet tahot vastustivat ekumeenista ajattelua ja kristittyjen "liiallista" yhteyttä. Monta kertaa toistui myös se ajatus, että Roger ei ollut niinkään akateeminen teologi tai systemaattinen muotoilija, vaan käytännön teologi. On jäänyt siis muiden tehtäväksi muodostaa hänen ajattelustaan analyyseja.

Before the seminar I had little or none information about the life and thinking of brother Roger. Many interesting facts of his life were told again and again in different lectures: for example how his thinking was influenced by his grandmother's openmindedness and kindness and also Roger's own grave illness of his childhood. I was also touched by the fact that many people were against him. Not all were so keen on helping others or the ecumenical thinking and unity of christians. Many times we were also told that brother Roger himself was not an academical theologian but more practical. It was up to others to form systematic analysis of his thinking.

Veli Rogerin kolme pääajatusta olivat ilo, armo ja yksinkertaisuus. Nämä sanat ovat kirjoitettuna Sovituksen kirkon seinustalla monilla eri kielillä. Armoon kuuluu keskeisenä lähimmäisten auttaminen. Sitä sekä idän ja lännen yhteyttä myös ikoniperinteen saralla kuvasi uusi ikoni, joka kuvaa vertausta laupiaasta samarialaisesta ja siteeraa tuomiosunnuntain evankeliumia "Sen, mitä olette tehneet yhdelle näistä vähäisimmistä, sen te olette tehneet minulle":

Three his main thoughts were joy, mercy and simplicity. These words were written on the wall of the church of Reconciliation. One main thing about mercy is helping all people. This and also the connection of eastern and western christianity is depicted on this new icon. It is about the samaritan and also the bible passage: "Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."



Ajatuksia, jotka jäivät päällimmäisiksi mieleen:

"Miten vähän tarvitaan elääkseen? Miten vähän tarvitaan vieraanvaraisuuteen?"

- Veli Rogerin ajattelussa korostui veljen sakramentti: jos emme osallistu siihen, lähimmäisen auttamiseen, muut sakramentit käyvät tyhjiksi

- meidän haavamme ovat portteja, joista Jeesus voi tulla sisään: kun olemme itse kohdanneet vaikeuksia, voimme ymmärtää myös toisen hätää

- auttamisenhalu ei automaattisesti herää siitä, että näemme toisen hädän: siihen tarvitaan se, että olemme itse olleet hädässä ja tarvinneet apua

- nuoret ovat tulevaisuuden toivo: nuoriin tulee satsata, heille tulee antaa vastuuta

- oma paikallinen yhteisö ja siellä läsnäolo fyysisesti on erittäin tärkeää: "juuri silloin, kun sinua ei huvita osallistua yhteiseen jumalanpalvelukseen, sinä tarvitset sitä eniten, on erittäin tärkeää, että olet fyysisesti siellä läsnä joka kerta"

- yhteisen rukouksen ja ehtoollisen vieton keskeisyys

Thoughts that have sticked with me the most:

"How little is needed to live? How little is needed to hospitality?"

- the sacrament of brother: if we won't participate in helping others, other sacraments are in vain

- our wounds are gates by which Jesus can enter: when we have been in difficult situation ourselves, we can understand the problems of others

- the need to help others don't automatically follow when we see suffering: it comes from the fact that we have suffered ourselves and therefore understand what it is like to need help

- the young people are the hope of the future: you have to spend time with them and also give them a lot of responsibility

- your local community is essential! "when you don't feel like participating in your own congregation's service, it is most vital to be physically present there: then you will need it the most. it is very important to be there every time."

- praying together, having the holy communion together

Kiinnostavimpia alustuksia olivat Rev. Laurent Schlumbergerin esitys protestanttisuuden ja luostarilaitoksen yhteyksistä, Karen Scottin alustus liittyen ateismiin ihmisen taustakatsomuksena ja miten siihen istuu veli Rogerin viljelemä hiljaisuuden hengellisyys sekä piispa Andrej Cilerdzic, joka toi ortodoksisen näkökulman Taizé-hengellisyyteen ja ekumeniaan. No tietenkin Kauko-Idän ja Afrikan näkökulmat olivat myös mielenkiintoisia :) mielenkiintoista esimerkiksi se, että Malesian lento-onnettomuuden uskontodialogisessa hartaudessa oli käytetty Taizé-elementtejä eli hiljaisuutta ja kynttilöitä. Jotka tietysti ovat samalla yleismaailmallisia hengellisyyden elementtejä.
